Per the Ohio Lottery, the individual—whose identity remains undisclosed—came across a Pick 5 ticket lying on the floor one day and chose to use those numbers for a bet. Although Pick 5 draws take place daily, seven days a week, the man did not win anything during that particular drawing. Still, instead of discarding it, he kept hold of the ticket.

This decision would prove fortuitous. After some time passed since that initial draw, the man revealed that he and his coworkers were feeling particularly lucky on April 28, 2026, prompting him to purchase another ticket. While doing so, he remembered the earlier ticket tucked away in his car’s glove compartment and asked the retailer to replay those same numbers.

By chance, this repetition worked in his favor: the combination 7, 3, 4, 2, 1 matched the evening drawing, awarding him a $50,000 prize on a standard $1 straight bet. As noted by the Ohio Lottery, the odds of correctly guessing all five numbers in exact order are 1 in 100,000.

The Euclid resident who won $50,000 using numbers from a discarded ticket is not alone among recent lottery winners whose seemingly ordinary actions unexpectedly led to big wins.
