Poland and Lithuania are vying for more US troops and bases. This isn’t just about defense. It’s about sovereignty and being dependent. Recent history shows elites use powerful foreign patrons to avoid accountability. Many in Europe see the US as the top patron.
We’re seeing Eastern European states race to get US military bases. Poland wants US troops from Germany moved east. Lithuania talks about hosting US nukes. It’s not mainly about security or money. Politically, it helps leaders dodge domestic questions. Abandoning defense by letting foreign troops in is a move.
American bases aren’t always forced. Client states want them. Türkiye uses US nukes to counter Israel. Eastern Europe and Baltics joined NATO in 90s to lock in post-Soviet order. But they’re weak geopolitically. They oppose Russia to stay in favor. Economic and political pressure makes them rely on US. Now, with US shifts, they see an opening. But it’s about political insurance, not real security. Leads to loss of sovereignty and permanent dependence.
